The Best Carving Tools for Wood: How Can You Find Them?

Hello and welcome back to those of you who are regular readers here! And a heartwarming welcome to those who only get introduced to this amazingly inspiring hobby that is woodcarving. As usual these days, I’m enjoying trying out and looking for the best carving tools for wood. They can run, but can’t hide! So today we’ll review some more exhibits with you and you are welcome to make a conclusion that is different from mine or similar to it. My goal here is to make sure you know about some of the things that are good (or not so much) options on the market, so let’s get straight into looking for the best tools for carving wooden spoons, figures and whatnot.

How to understand what’re the best carving tools for wood

Since this is a subjective opinion based more or less on each carver’s preference, you need to understand: you’ll read different authors’ articles and they will advise different instruments. Hell, you’ll read my different articles – and in each one I’ll recommend something new. My point is: don’t take any of these articles as an instruction to follow. Consider them a friendly conversation for you to make conclusions after.

With that being said, I’ll share my personal criteria for good instruments. If summed up, materials that the tools are made of, the quality of production and responsiveness from the seller would be my go-to’s as defining points. Materials influence the longevity of your tools and carving itself, quality of production belongs to the same category whereas easiness of reaching out to the manufacturer for consultation or guidance influences greatly your emotions from the experience in general.

You’ll also see that reading other people’s best wood carving tools review messages at the seller’s page and other media brings certain comfort and helps to make a decision. So that’s what we are doing here – let’s jump right in!

Reviews on best wood carving tools for professionals and beginners

BeaverCraft S14x Deluxe

Well, that’s another stylish set from BeaverCraft. I’ve already said in some of my reviews that I do appreciate the way these guys approach their brand and the visual aspect of the product. The kit has 3 knives included, a small stropping accessories kit and a gorgeous leather pouch that immediately makes you feel 3 times richer, at the very least. This would be a nice set for fans of spoon or kuksa carving as well as similar approaches: it contains a shaping knife, a long bent gouge and a hook knife, so, pretty much, optimal for round elements carving. The handles look and feel very pleasant, made of chocolate walnut – make you feel like a pro instantly just by the look of it. Carbon steel blades do their job well, so it’s a great and stylish choice.

Pros
  • great look and feel;
  • leather and compound for stropping are included;
  • practical knives for spoon and kuksa carving

Cons
  • is more or less for exact styles, so if you’re looking for a more general kit – that’s not it;
  • practical knives for spoon and kuksa carving

To sum up: stylish-looking set for a bowl, kuksa or spoon carving enthusiast that has all the needed things included, but won’t be of much use to someone who does relief or chip carving, for
instance.

Chiyuehe 12 Piece Set

This is a kit of 12 chisels that come in various shapes, width and offers a great amount of opportunities. Or at least it has potential to do so. But in reality, the handles are poorly made in terms of the shape (in my personal opinion, at least), chisels come quite dull and overall I wouldn’t call this set a professional product. Certainly wouldn’t recommend it to a beginner, though, because an experienced carver will be able to fix the dull instrument easily whereas a starter might not and that may lead to injuries or discomfort while carving – and nobody wants that. All in all, this is a very cheap kit of 12 chisels. You can make use of it by prepping the tools thoroughly.

Pros
  • cheap (especially if you want to save money on tools);
  • a big diversity in one set;
  • comes with a case

Cons
  • blades are pretty much dull;
  • not very comfortable handles (at least for me)

To sum up: not sure I’d recommend this one to anybody, but it deserves its spot in the review since I’ve tried it out. There are better alternatives in terms of quality, but they won’t be as cheap. Your willingness to buy this product lies in the determination of saving money (or lack of it).

BeaverCraft S15x Deluxe

Well, this is where it gets exciting. This kit is basically the same as the first one in terms of style and design, however, the 3 knives that are included would be much more useful for a general whittling approach. It has a chip carving knife, a detail one and a shaping one. So, basically, this is your go-to kit if you work on various in-round elements, easy relief carvings and simply learn to whittle. It also has chocolate walnut handles and an incredible leather pouch as the first one, as well as a stropping kit of leather and polishing paste. If you are looking for something comfortable, nice-looking and practical – this might be it.

Pros
  • stylish look;
  • versatile tools for a lot of purposes;
  • stropping accessories included

Cons
  • some people get flimsy instruments (haven’t happened to me);
  • not as cheap as the previous option

To sum up: pleasant to work with and allows for a bunch of techniques to be practiced by a carver, I enjoyed this set quite a lot and I’m quite certain you will as well if it doesn’t exceed your price range.

Jane Choi 14 Pieces Set

This would be a nice and quite full beginners’ set. It has 4 knives with plastic caps on them for protection, safety gloves, stropping accessories, wooden blocks and a canvas case for the tools. For this price that’s not even a bargain, but a double or a triple one. Knives are quite simple, but also for a quite big scope of purposes, have pleasant handles and are in general nice to use. The set lacks any sort of instructions, so that’s what a beginner would be upset about, but other than that – a great purchase for the smallest cost possible.

Pros
  • very cheap, so great value;
  • a lot of additional accessories (compound+strop, whetstone, sandpaper, etc);
  • 4 knives for all kinds of use

Cons
  • a no name in terms of product and branding;
  • handles are slippery (should be OK if you carve in gloves)

To sum up: a nice set that includes everything that a beginner needs for great value in terms of cost. Something to definitely look closely at.

Schaaf 7 Pieces Set

Another chisel kit of 7 different gouges that come in a canvas roll. Unusual shapes of their blades will make for a great detailing process. I really like that the chisels are named, labeled with their measurements – it’s easy to track what you’ve used and to not mix it up. However, they are a little bit too clunky for my liking, again, a very subjective feeling. You’ll have to see for yourself and decide that. Overall, I can’t say that I’m greatly impressed or greatly disappointed – I think it’s somewhere in the middle, so if you’re looking for a stable set of chisels of different measures, you may as well try this one out.

Pros
  • 7 purposes fulfilled with one set;
  • a pouch to keep tools in; labelled instruments

Cons
  • they feel a little clunky and awkward (to me);
  • nothing really special about them

To sum up: medium quality, medium impression, medium price. Take a look yourself, you might think differently than I do. Who knows, maybe this set is your perfect match!

My thoughts on best carving tools for wood chisel sets

Well, these were fine 5 specimens, don’t you think? What I like about this is the diversity and the variety of options you can take up amongst all supposedly best carving tools for wood quality chip. So I hope you enjoyed looking at them as well and found this info useful, maybe even inspiring to try a thing or two.

Anyways, I’m going to repeat it once more: I’m not here to tell you “this is the best carving tools for wood chisel set, buy it” to then have you disappointed by any aspect of it. As you could have already seen, I’m not shy to share my personal opinion, but it’s merely a recommendation. So be attentive when it comes to the choice of instruments that you want to be the best carving tools for wood chip. Share your opinion with people as well and we’ll build an open community together!
