Best Wood Carving Tools

Review of The Best Carving Set! | Check It by Yourself!

Hello again and today we’re going to review some of the options that I deem worthy enough to be considered the best carving set for wood quality. I like to repeat over and over again: this is merely a recommendation and a share of thoughts. You’re welcome to do anything you please with the information: forget, remember as food for thought or take it as a call to action (it would make me happy if some of the options you’ll find here will be interesting for you). I’m simply talking here, reviewing stuff, and you can make all the decisions for yourself if you find things useful.

Now, before we go searching for the best carving set for wood in Australia or somewhere even further away, let’s figure out the priorities here. Some people will be looking for the cheapest option possible, some will be buying only from one seller they trust and some are simply confused because of the amount of possibilities. I suppose this review will be most suitable for the last group of people. I’ll show you 5 options of different price range, functionality and sellers to make an approximate conclusion of what you want or need.

What is a demonstration of the best carving set for wood quality?

To me, it’s going to be the same answer as usual: materials that the tools are made of, the quality of production and responsiveness from the seller. All of these things are equally important and only you can figure out what is the most essential to you. Seller’s ability to be in touch with buyers is crucial in terms of shipping process, some questions regarding the use of the tools (especially to beginners) and other things. The quality of production is meant here in terms of how well the instruments are put together, that’s very important if you don’t take the pleasure from re-aligning the tools for yourself, of course. And the materials will influence your overall experience and satisfaction from carving, they define how well one tool or another is able to execute its job.

In my opinion, it’s much better to grab something more expensive and use it for years than choose a cheap set and buy it again and again once a year. However, that’s your call here and not my place to judge. After this short conclusion I’m more than ready to move to the reviews, hope so are you!

The best carving set for wood: Canada, the US and all around

BeaverCraft S15x Deluxe

Well, this is where it gets exciting. This kit has a chip carving knife, a detail one and a shaping one. These  3 knives that are included would be greatly useful for a general whittling approach. So, basically, this is your go-to kit if you work on various in-round elements, easy relief carvings and simply learn to whittle. It also has chocolate walnut handles and an incredible leather pouch as well as a stropping kit of leather and polishing paste. If you are looking for something comfortable, nice-looking and practical – this might be just what you need.

Pros
  • stylish look;
  • versatile tools for a lot of purposes;
  • stropping accessories included

Cons
  • some people get flimsy instruments (haven’t happened to me);
  • not as cheap as the previous option

To sum up: pleasant to work with and allows for a bunch of techniques to be practiced by a carver, I enjoyed this set quite a lot and I’m quite certain you will as well if it doesn’t exceed your price range.

Flexcut KN300 Set

This is a lovely 2-piece knife set with the famous golden stropping compound. It has two detail knives, one with a bigger blade and one with a smaller one – so it’s a great kit for somebody who is looking to diversify their carving process with more intricate and tiny details that are not done easily in the first place, not even talking about doing them with a general carving knife. These knives have sharp thin tips and bevels, quite small but indeed handy for detailing. Comfortable wooden shafts and a polishing compound that’s included in the set, overall, make this kit one of the finest knife sets for detail making (knives exactly, I’d still prefer chisels for the purpose).

Pros
  • 2 knives for various detailing;
  • thin tips for better lining;
  • polishing compound included

Cons
  • only for specific purpose;
  • some people say the blades get dull quickly and the compound doesn’t work well

To sum up: small but nice set of two detailing knives, so if you were looking for something to work on the tiny little things with, this is your desire right here. Might get dull too fast, but regular honing should help with that. Enjoy the small details with the set in front of you.

BeaverCraft SC01 Chisel Set

Talking about chisels, this might be one of the best chisel set for wood carving I’ve encountered. You might be impressed with a bigger amount of chisels in one set or more additional accessories, but since I was mostly looking for the proper tools to fit my approach, this was it. The kit has four gouges, each for a new purpose, a stropping leather piece with compound and a canvas pouch to keep it all in. The chisels vary from a very thin V-profile one to two more wide and less rounded, with an addition of a bent gouge to work on round shapes. All in all, this is a really nice set for various detail making and the quality is a proper European one as these guys promise.

Pros
  • four chisels for everything;
  • stropping kit included;
  • carbon blades and ergonomic handles

Cons
  • it wouldn’t hurt to add a couple more chisels for variety in terms of width;
  • they are mostly for hand carving so if you like your mallet – this won’t be for you

To sum up: a nice set for a very affordable price, lets you work on details thoroughly and master all things you may want to. Not intended for hammer or mallet assisted carving, so keep that in mind.

Flexcut KN100 Set of 4

Flexcut has made a name for itself so why not talk about it some more? This is a 4-piece knife set with a shaping knife, a detail one and two pelican knives, a bigger and a smaller one, For those of you who haven’t heard or tried working with a pelican knife, here’s what Flexcut themselves say to describe that knife: “The Pelican Knife has a curved blade that offers a clean slicing action similar to a skew. The point is narrowed for a tight turning radius while still being durable. It cuts very well in hollow areas.” This set also has a canvas pouch similar to the BeaverCraft’s one above to keep the tools in, so you’ll keep them organised easily.

Pros
  • 4 knives for detail carving;
  • pouch to keep instruments organised;
  • durable blades

Cons
  • more for detailing than anything else;
  • not the cheapest option

To sum up: very nice detail knife set, but not the most optimal one for general carving time, so consider it yourself. A great way to try working with a unique knife and learn new opportunities here.

BeaverCraft S18X Deluxe Kit

I’ve tried to not play favourites here, but you can see it for yourself. I honestly love the way they care about their brand and the style of instruments they offer to customers. Simply put, this is a gorgeous knife set. It has 8 instruments, a small stropping kit and a genuine leather pouch to finish it off with elegance. If you haven’t decided yet on which carving style you want to learn or like the most, this is your kit to go for, since it has knives for everything. Chip carving, geometric carving, spoon carving, usual whittling – it has it all. Makes it incredibly easy for you to not need to choose anymore and simply enjoy yourself while carving. And looks so nice, check for yourself!

Pros
  • for any carving style;
  • 8 tools for various purposes;
  • genuine leather pouch and chocolate walnut handles make them look very impressive

Cons
  • may be overdoing it if you stick to one particular style;
  • not the best packaging on the knife’ blades;
  • doesn’t include instructions (they’ve got video tutorials on YouTube though)

To sum up: a generally stylish-looking and very functional set, allows you to try a lot of things, might not be for you if you prefer sticking with one particular style or approach.

The conclusion for the best carving sets for wood reviews

Now that you’ve read your share of the best carving sets for wood reviews from me, you’ll be able to tell for yourself which of them are appropriate for you and which ones you’d prefer not trying. These sets are what I’ve used for some period of time recently, so I have some things to say about them. My only hope is that you find what you are looking for here.

And, of course, it is not easy for anyone who is not here in the US (at least, that’s my assumption because all these things I’ve ordered from US Amazon). However, I try to share things that can be delivered worldwide as well (or so I hope!). One of these can be the best carving set for wood UK, for all I know. Or they can be the best carving set for wood Canada options. Take a chance and find out!
