Best Wood Carving Kits for Whittling: A Review

Hello and welcome (or just welcome if you’re new)! I’m Victor Davis, here to spread some good vibes and hopefully offer some helpful advice on something we all love – wood carving kits. When it comes to this hobby, you generally have two paths to choose from in terms of tools. You can either keep exploring, trying new things, and constantly seeking improvement, like me, or you can find something you like and stick with it. Both approaches have their merits and drawbacks.

If you stick with what you know, you might miss out on better options – ones that are cheaper, easier to maintain, or more comfortable to use. But being an experimenter isn’t cheap either. It means staying vigilant, constantly researching new products, and staying open to trying new things.

Personally, I enjoy being a researcher and reviewer. It keeps me up to date with all the latest developments in the wood carving world. And I hope you enjoy it too, because it means you get insights into things you might not have considered otherwise. Today, I’d like to share my thoughts on what I believe to be the best wood carving kit.

The characteristics of the top wood carving kits

I’ve mentioned a few times that buying a whittling set is much better, especially for beginners, than purchasing individual tools. Of course, if you only carve occasionally and just need a basic knife, that’s a different situation. But I’m mostly thinking about enthusiasts like myself who invest a lot of time and resources into carving and perfecting our projects.

What makes these kits so much better than buying separate tools is that you get everything you need in one package. It saves you time searching for specific items and it’s usually cheaper compared to buying each tool individually.

There are also fantastic beginner sets available that come with wood, patterns, paints, and more. These make it incredibly easy to start carving and discover how enjoyable this hobby can be. They might not offer as much variety as buying individual tools, but they’re a great way for newcomers to get started.

Overall, there are significant benefits to getting a set of tools, and this time I’m going to share my opinion on the best wood carving kit, which includes chisels, knives, and other essential tools.

BeaverCraft S18X Deluxe Kit

In simple terms, this knife set is stunning. It includes 8 tools, a small stropping kit, and a genuine leather pouch for a touch of sophistication. If you’re still unsure about which carving style you want to pursue or enjoy the most, this set is perfect because it covers all bases. Whether it’s chip carving, geometric carving, spoon carving, or traditional whittling, this set has you covered. It makes decision-making easy and allows you to simply enjoy the carving process. Plus, it looks fantastic – see for yourself!

Pros
  • for any carving style;
  • 8 tools for various purposes;
  • genuine leather pouch and chocolate walnut handles make them look very impressive

Cons
  • may be overdoing it if you stick to one particular style;
  • not the best packaging on the knife’ blades;
  • doesn’t include instructions (they’ve got video tutorials on YouTube though)

In summary, it’s a stylish and highly functional set that lets you explore various carving techniques. However, it might not be suitable if you prefer to stick to one particular style or approach.

Poliwell 20 Pieces Knife set

This set can be seen as a handy toolkit for beginners. It consists of 8 knives: 2 main ones (one for general roughing and one for chip carving) and 6 detail knives, each with a different shape. Additionally, it comes with various accessories including a stropping kit with a leather strop, compound, and whetstone; a couple of blade sheaths; sandpaper, safety tape, protective gloves, and a canvas roll pouch to store the tools. To be honest, the blade quality isn’t the best, but it’s still a great gift idea for someone interested in trying carving since it includes everything needed to start.

Pros
  • all in set to begin carving right away (excluded wood);
  • good gift idea;
  • a lot of accessories for safety

Cons
  • not the best blades in terms of sharpness and toughness;
  • a lot of extra things you don’t need if you’re only looking for tools

In summary, it’s a comprehensive kit with all the essentials for beginners, making it a great gift idea. However, I wouldn’t recommend it for someone more experienced.

BeaverCraft S13Box

This set is another delightful one to behold. One thing I really appreciate about BeaverCraft is their commitment to their brand and the style they convey. This kit comes in a nicely labeled box and includes 3 knives perfect for spoon carving, a basswood spoon blank, a small stropping kit, and an instruction booklet. It features a knife for roughing out the blank, a small detail knife, and a hook knife – basically everything you need to start carving your own projects right away.

Pros
  • knives for an overall project (not one);
  • stylish wooden case to keep the tools in;
  • instruction and a wooden blank to carve included

Cons
  • more or less for one particular style (maybe two);
  • not the best packaging for the blades again

In summary, it’s a smaller set designed for more specific uses. It would make a fantastic gift for someone just starting out, especially with the inclusion of a wooden blank.

OKTIME 6 Pieces Set

Firstly, it’s important to note that it’s not strictly a 6-piece set – while there are indeed 6 tools included, there are also numerous additional accessories. These include a tool case (reminiscent of the pencil cases we used in school), a stropping kit with a whetstone, polishing paste, and leather strop, gloves, protective sheaths for the blades, and even a spoon blank. It’s quite affordable, with handles that look and feel very nice. However, there are some areas that could be improved, such as the absence of sandpaper. Nevertheless, it does offer compensation with its 6 knives designed for various styles and purposes. Obtaining sandpaper separately shouldn’t pose much difficulty.

Pros
  • allows you to learn multiple styles at once;
  • a lot of safety accessories;
  • a nice idea for a beginner

Cons
  • lacks sandpaper;
  • not the best case (although that’s quite personal, I’m just talking about my preference)

In summary, it’s a solid choice as a gift for beginners, with knives that are stylish in appearance but lacking in certain aspects. There are a couple of areas that could use improvement.

Flexcut 3-Knife Starter Set

Couldn’t leave out a little Flexcut set, could I? This kit consists of 3 knives mainly suitable for detail and chip carving, along with a polishing compound. It may not be as comprehensive as the previous sets with all the accessories included. However, if those were geared more towards beginners and less experienced carvers, you’ll find that Flexcut focuses more on the product itself (which might not necessarily be a bad thing). These three knives are particularly handy for detail carving as well as chip or relief carving.

Pros
  • sharp quality knives for exact purpose;
  • polishing compound in set;
  • comfortable handles

Cons
  • only for a particular carving style (you might be looking for something more flexible);
  • quite a pricey set for 3 knives

In summary, known for their quality, Flexcut isn’t afraid to command a slightly higher price compared to other sellers on the market, so keep that in mind. It’s a nice compact set for chip and detail carving.

The best carving kit for wood review summary

As you can see, there are quite a few different sets showcased here. I’ve aimed to provide variety and allow you to decide for yourself what suits your needs better – whether it’s just tools or a larger set with accessories included. In my opinion, both options are good, depending on your requirements. For beginners, a larger set might be more beneficial, whereas for experienced carvers, many of the extras may not be necessary since you likely already have them.

Hopefully, these reviews have helped you find the best carving kit for wood, whether you’re in Canada or anywhere else in the world. It’s been enjoyable for me to test out and describe various types of tools and sets (but you probably already knew that). So, whether you’re looking for the best carving kit for wood chisels in the UK or elsewhere, explore the stores, click on the links, and discover what you like!
