Best Wood Carving Tools

Best Whittling Brand Among Wood Carvers Beginners

As a woodcarver developing your carving business or simply trying to supply your hobby with the best possible tools, you might wonder which are the best wood carving brands. As this is a question I get a lot, I decided to make a short list of the most popular and reliable wood carving brands out there, according to my experience so far.

These brands are from all over the world – Ukraine, Switzerland, the US, and Sweden. Luckily, as we live in an era of eCommerce, it is possible to find and buy the knives produced by most of these brands online.

When I chose the brands I’m about to present, I took into consideration the age of the brand, as I believe that decades of being in the business definitely contribute to the quality – although not decidedly. Then, of course, I considered the quality of their tools, and naturally the price. However, since we are speaking of top-quality products, I had to take notice of the particular environmental care some of the brands pay attention to. Read on and decide which brand will deliver your next whittling knife to your doorstep!

BeaverCraft

I believe it’s always best to start from the youngest! Founded in 2014 in Ukraine, BeaverCraft won the wood carving market with a great price-quality ratio. Relying on Ukraine’s long wood carving tradition, you know that buying their products will get you the best possible quality for the price. Customer reviews on Amazon will tell you that they achieved their goal, and made great quality carving tools available for all.

Pros
  • Great price
  • Great quality
  • Variety of products

Cons
  • A young brand

Flexcut

Starting as a woodcarving school in Erie, Pennsylvania in the 1980s, Flexcut grew to be one of the most famous woodcarving brands in the USA, for the quality and diversity of their products. However, in terms of discounts and coupons, you will rarely find them offered by Flexcut.

Pros
  • Great quality
  • Variety of products
  • Great for beginners

Cons
  • A relatively young brand
  • No discounts

Pfeil

Now we are moving towards brands more appealing to professionals. Pfeil is a brand from Switzerland, Europe, with a tradition longer than a century. It is one of the best wood carving knife brands in the world, appreciated because of the high quality of the carving products. However, their prices don’t make them available for all.

Pros
  • Great quality
  • Tradition
  • Environmentally conscious

Cons
  • Price
  • Not so easy to find on the market

Helvie

Originally founded in Indiana, Helvie is another US brand, mostly known among woodcarvers from the central states. It is a family business, so they don’t always manage to put up with the demand, despite a bit high prices. Although not in business for too long (they started by the end of the 1980s), their tools are known for good quality and are definitely worth a try.

Pros
  • Great quality
  • Durability

Cons
  • Price
  • A young brand
  • Not so easy to find on the market (supply shortages)

Morakniv

Morakniv is not only one of the best whittling knife brands but is almost a collector’s choice. Their fame comes from more than 130 years of tradition, premium quality, and genuine care for the environment and sustainability. You can easily recognize Morakniv knives by their handles, which are usually painted in dark red. This handle color is a tradition from the wood carving region in Sweden this company originates from. Although you will need a hefty amount of money to get one of their tools, once you take them into your hands you will feel why Morakniv is one of the best whittling brands in the world.

Pros
  • Premium quality
  • Tradition
  • Environmentally conscious

Cons
  • Price

To Wrap Up

The list of best wood carving knife brands you just read is only one opinion. There are many brands out there that produce great tools, but these five seem like the best out of the best to me. I guess the only way to truly know which is the best wood carving tools brand is to try out their products and see for yourself. Once you do, make sure you share your experience with the other woodcarvers, let’s learn from each other!
